London Olympics

Congradulations to Wolf Ollins the designers behind the new London Olympics logo 2012.  Not only have they designed a ground breaking logo but hey have avoided the usual design cliched graphics normally associated with european design. What we probably expected to see was either a Miroesque, loose style illustration or a nike's tick or go faster stripes interlocked around the typography. Instead they have produced a original logo design witch has own distincitive typographic look. This distinctive style will create iconic branding, the reason: because it is original.

Dublin is now part of a network of cities that value design, a network celebrated through the biennial World Design Capital designation.

On October 26th we will find out whether Dublin, Cape Town or Bilbao has been selected to host the 2014 designation. Dublin’s short listing is recognition that Dublin design is world class. The announcement will be made at the IDA World Congress in Taipei, Taiwan. We’re all looking forward to the designation announcement but in the meantime, we are continuing to work on some exciting PIVOT opportunities.

Euro 2012 logo launched

The official logo, identity and slogan for football's 2012 European
championships have been unveiled...

Designed by Portuguese group Brandia Central, it features two flowers symbolising the joint host nations Poland and Ukraine who will, as the official slogan has it, be "Creating History Together" at the tournament.

According to Uefa the logo symbolises "the emotion and passion of the competition, while the stem denotes the structural aspect of the competition, UEFA and European football. Nature has inspired other features of the visual identity, with woodland green, sun yellow, aqua blue, sky blue and blackberry purple being the crucial tones of the palette of colours to figure in official tournament branding."

Is the traditional studio photographer about to die?

"Photographers will move into CGI, they’ll have no choice,” says leading car photographer Carl Lyttle. First used in the movie industry then picked up by architects in computer-aided design, computer-generated imagery hit car advertising about five years ago. It’s now being used to advertise everything from mobile phones to holidays, and photographers are only too aware of the fact. “We’re fast approaching the tipping point,” says Lyttle. “Those photographers who aren’t moving into 3D won’t be around in three or four years.”

In a recent case McCambridges bread took the rival bread maker Brennans to court over branding dispute. At a glance, when you look at both packages, there re similarities. e.g Brennans have always used yellow as their predominant branding colour. I do remember on my weekly shopping excursions seeing brown and cream packaging selling a wholemeal pan. However this is a whole grain bread and brown and green are organic colours that are appealing to todays healthy lifestyle market.

The judge ruled in McCarbridges favour stating "The judge found positioning of the identifiable Brennans colours of yellow and red, its logo, and other distinguishing features on the packaging did not overcome the rist of confusion with the McCambridge product, as such distinguishing features might not be clearly visable to purchers and might not stand out clearly enough."

New Temple Street Hospital Schools Logo
Paragon Design was commissioned to create a new logo for Temple street children's hospital school. As with all logos it had to fit a brief. In this case it had to be child like but reflect the friendly atmosphere to encourage children to attend the school whilst being cared for in hospital. The drawings were created by the children themselves and the greek iconic door case is an iconic part of the hospital building itself.

Design in Ireland in 2011 has moved towards the centre of the stage. The short-listing of Dublin’s World Design Capital 2014 submission, entitled Pivot Dublin, has focused worldwide attention on design in Ireland. The world is aware of the economic crisis that faces Ireland, and it is interested to see how we are using design to find a way to overcome the significant challenges that we all face.

The Pivot Dublin submission presents a fantastic snapshot of design in Ireland today.Fifty years ago, in 1961, the Report of the Scandinavian Design Group in Ireland wascommissioned. Designers came and told us what we had been doing and what weshould be doing. The Pivot Dublin submission tells the world not only what we havebeen doing and are doing, but, crucially, what we will be doing. The plans areambitious and they will need your involvement.

London Design Festival

Think Human Design Week

With the theme "Think Human'', copenhagan Design week shows the DNA in Danish designthinking; formed and founded by the Danish human tradition that descends from our constitution and our democratic society. The human tradition has for decades been the basis for Danish product design, e.g. the well-known furniture architects of the 1950's and is now a driving force for the role of the designer in a complex world. The programme demonstrates how design can contribute solving both local and global challenges – in relation to the invididual, the society and globally.
